Hard cuts for neighborhood schools

Mark Brown of the Chicago Sun-Times has reported the effect on neighborhood schools of the new Chicago Public Schools (CPS) budgeting scheme.

Representative of CPS-mandated reductions, one Southwest high school must cut its budget by 18 percent, and an elementary school must slash its budget by 27 percent.

CPS's new budgeting scheme aims to give principals "flexibility to minimize harm to the classroom," Brown reports, but "teacher cuts and other educational impacts are unavoidable."
